Ross Perot Honored with West Point Award
On 15 October, H. Ross Perot ’53 received the Sylvanus Thayer Award from the U.S. Military Academy’s Association of Graduates for being an outstanding citizen whose service and accomplishments exemplify personal devotion to their motto, “DUTY, HONOR, COUNTRY.”

’98 Wins Marine Corps Marathon
Lieutenant Commander John Mentzer ran the “fun” 10k in 2 hours, 21 minutes and 48 seconds. The British Royal Marines, however, reclaimed the men’s Challenge Cup, while the U.S. Marines female team kept theirs.

“Frontline: Obama’s War”
Last month, the PBS show “Frontline” chronicled the 8-year history and debated the future of the war in Afghanistan, interviewing experts and military leaders such as Admiral Mike Mullen ’68. Watch the show online.

Two Soccer Players Receive Patriot League Accolades
Midshipman Shelly Moeller ’10, center back, was named defensive player of the week for the third time this season, and Midshipman Beth Reed ’10, team captain, was named goalkeeper of the week for the second time in her Navy career by the Patriot League.

Soaring Sailors
This past summer, midshipmen took part in the newly resurrected flying program, the Naval Academy Fixed-Wing Training Squadron (VT-NA), a soaring program putting mids in sailplanes gliding over the fields of Pennsylvania. Watch the video and interview!

Alaska—The Way It Was Meant to be Seen
For those who love wonderful wildlife, amazing scenery and the chance to see it all up close, Small Ship Alaska is a great small 36-passenger ship with all the amenities and none of the crowds. Travel with expert naturalist Greg Greer and like-minded travelers.


Midshipmen Work With Israel Defense Force
Last summer, 11 Midshipmen spent three weeks in Israel, visiting major holy and historical sites while learning about the political structure, IDF military structure and service and daily life of citizens.

Chapel Rededicated
It is daunting to restore icon, but the Academy’s beacon of light reopened its polished doors once more to reveal an astonishing restoration effort inside thanks to many private gifts given on behalf of alumni. View the photos and video here and look for the upcoming feature in Shipmate.
